When on your Redwood Frest Vacation be sure to continue up Hwy 101 to California’s northwestern most corner until you arrive in Crescent City, a seaside town named for the beautiful crescent-shaped sandy beach to its south. Given its location, Crescent City
is sometimes referred to as “The Redwood Gate to the Golden State” but it is also known as a wonderful access point to the majestic Redwood National & State Parks all located nearby.
Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, a predominantly old growth park, lies just 9 miles to the east and boasts abundant wildlife, 20 miles of hiking trails, and river access to the
state’s last free flowing river, the absolutely pristine and gorgeous Smith River. Other nearby parks include Redwood National Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, all just a short drive south. Together these
parks provide countless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, boating (including jet boat tours), and camping. Fishing is another popular form of recreation in this region, especially due to the fact that king salmon and steelhead trout runs take place
hear in the fall and winter months. Of course, you may want to enjoy the world class 20-hole Disc Golf Course or Surfing popular South Beach!
Other points of interest near Crescent City include the historic
Battery Point Lighthouse, an active lighthouse constructed in the year 1856. The lighthouse museum offers tours of the lighthouse and has several interesting maritime artifacts on display as well as various photos and documents outlining the history of
this California landmark. Another great attraction in town is the
Ocean World Aquarium. Considered to be one of the best privately owned small aquariums in the United States, Ocean World offers guided tours, seal & sea lion shows, touch and feel tide pools, shark petting, and the chance to observe an amazing variety of
sea life. And, last but not least, you have to visit
Trees of Mystery with the
SkyTrail through the Majestic Redwoods, Giant Paul Bunyan, guided trail, museum, and much more - great for kids and adults!
Fun Crescent City annual events include The Del Norte County Fair in the spring and the Sea Cruise Car Show held in October on Columbus Day weekend. Events to check out nearby include Smith River Days, the
Klamath Salmon Festival, and the Blackberry Festival & Harvest Celebration, also in Klamath. Explore Crescent City, where the redwoods meet the sea!
